Myth vs. Fact:
Separating Truth from Trend in Facial Aesthetics
By Shanna Concepcion, RN, CANS
At Dr. David W. Kim’s practice, we hear a lot of the same questions and assumptions about injectables and skin treatments, often shaped more by social media than by science. Our team believes informed patients make the best decisions for their own faces. We’re breaking down some common myths around filler, neurotoxin, and PRF, and replacing them with the facts we see play out in the treatment room every day.
Filler
MYTH: “Fillers will make me look overdone”
FACT: The best filler results are often the ones you don’t even realize are filler. By focusing on subtle changes that enhance your natural features, Dr. Kim’s team of experts strives to create results that look refreshed and natural, never overdone.
MYTH: “Fillers are too expensive”
FACT: Filler is an investment. While it may carry a higher upfront cost than neurotoxin, results can last 1 to 2 years depending on the area treated and the product used. With consistent maintenance treatments, many patients need less filler over time, making it a lasting investment in your appearance.
MYTH: “Filler is only for older individuals”
FACT: Filler has come a long way and can benefit adults of all ages. It’s no longer just about smoothing wrinkles. Today, filler can help prevent early signs of aging, refine minor imperfections, and enhance natural features at any age.
Neurotoxin
MYTH: “Botox will freeze my face and I won’t be able to make expressions”
FACT: The goal of neurotoxins is a refreshed look, not a frozen one. Treatment relaxes the specific muscles responsible for a line while leaving the rest of your face free to move naturally, so you’ll still laugh, raise your eyebrows, and look like yourself, just without the tired or stressed expression those lines can create.
MYTH: “Neurotoxin is painful”
FACT: Most patients describe treatment as no more than a quick pinch. The needle used is extremely fine, and a full treatment typically takes about fifteen minutes with little to no discomfort afterward.
MYTH: “Your body builds up a tolerance to neurotoxin, so it stops working the longer you use it”
FACT: Your body does not automatically become “immune” to neurotoxin with repeated treatments. It temporarily reduces nerve signals to targeted muscles, softening expression lines. While rare, some patients can develop antibodies that reduce its effectiveness. The risk appears low with aesthetic use, and appropriate dosing and spacing between treatments can help support consistent results over time.
PRF Skin Rejuvenation
MYTH: “PRF is the same thing as filler”
FACT: PRF and filler solve different problems. Filler adds volume, restoring shape and contour. PRF doesn’t add volume. It uses your own blood to trigger your skin’s natural collagen and repair process, improving overall texture, tone, and resilience from within. That’s what makes it such a strong complement to filler rather than a replacement for it.
MYTH: “PRF treatment is the same for every patient”
FACT: Deciding whether PRF, filler, or a combination is right for your face takes a real consultation. Dr. Kim’s injectors take the time during that consultation to walk patients through their options and build a plan based on each individual’s unique skin and goals.
MYTH: “It requires a long recovery”
FACT: PRF is a minimally invasive treatment with relatively little downtime. Compared with surgical procedures, PRF typically involves a much simpler recovery. Temporary swelling, tenderness, or bruising are possible, but significant downtime is generally not expected.
The Bottom Line
Good facial aesthetics starts with good information over trends. Behind every treatment at Dr. Kim’s office is a team working under the guidance of both a leading nurse injector educator and a facial plastic surgeon whose expertise spans the operating room and the injection chair alike. Whether you’re considering your first treatment or refining a routine you’ve had for years, the most reliable results start with an honest conversation.
